Athens Couple Found Dead in Watercress Subdivision; Police Investigating Apparent Murder-Suicide
Authorities in Athens, Alabama, are investigating the deaths of two people found inside a home in the Watercress Subdivision on Friday morning in what police believe to be an apparent murder-suicide.
According to Athens Police Department Chief Anthony Pressnell, officers were dispatched to the residence around 9:30 a.m., where they discovered two individuals deceased inside the home. Both victims had sustained gunshot wounds.
Officials stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public and that the investigation remains active.
“There is no threat to the community,” Chief Pressnell said. “The investigation is ongoing. We are contacting family members and do not have further information to share at this time.”
The victims have been identified as a married couple, including Sabrina Owens Bates, who is being remembered by family as a devoted mother, sister, and friend. She was predeceased by her mother, Brenda Owens. Her husband, Danny, was also found deceased at the scene. The couple were reportedly retired and well known in their neighborhood.
Witnesses and neighbors react
Neighbors in the Watercress Subdivision described the area as typically quiet, saying they were stunned by the police presence Friday morning.
One resident said they first noticed “several police cars and officers moving quickly through the neighborhood,” adding that it was “unusual and immediately alarming for such a peaceful street.”
Another neighbor described the couple as “friendly and respectful,” noting that they were often seen around the community and rarely caused any disturbance. “It’s heartbreaking. You just don’t expect something like this here,” the neighbor said.
Several residents also expressed shock at the news as word spread through the subdivision. Some said they only realized the severity of the situation after seeing investigators and crime scene activity outside the home.
Community in mourning
As investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths, friends and neighbors are beginning to share memories of the couple, describing them as kind and familiar faces in the community.
Local residents have also expressed sympathy for the family members affected, as they try to come to terms with the sudden and tragic loss.
Authorities have not released further details at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.
